Of the decorating process, Lindsey explains; “I think if you can dress yourself, then you can dress your home. I was a bit nervous when I moved in here because I’d never decorated a house before, but I feel like it’s worked! I don’t intentionally dress like my house but today I’ve got pink and green on so there you go—I match the kitchen.”

In the kitchen, Lindsey’s paired \nPink 03 walls\n with modular white Ikea units. Like the rest of us, she gets most of her inspiration from Instagram and Pinterest and, unable to find any countertops she liked, Lindsey decided to tile her kitchen surfaces using white tiles and pink grouting. “I even tiled the kitchen table. I’ve gone a bit tile mad”. 

“I’m obsessed with Scandinavian design. I love how they pair colours together”, says Lindsey. “When I was a hairdresser we were made to wear black every day. So when I stopped I felt free to start experimenting a lot more with colour”. From the kitchen and stairs to the living room, you’ll see a lot of pink and green colour contrast. “I absolutely love pink. It’s basically a neutral colour. When you walk into the kitchen, yes it’s bright but it still feels really gentle and warm. It just pulls in all the other colours so nicely”.

In the living room, we continue with the pink and green theme, but this time with pastel green walls, (lots of) pink velvet, and a playful checkerboard theme in the soft furnishings. The inspiration was \nSketch’s pre-yellow makeover\n. “I wanted it to be really minimal, kind of as if it had been dipped in green paint. But I also wanted it to feel a bit odd, a bit dreamlike”, Lindsey explains. “I purposefully haven’t put any art on the walls because I wanted the colour to do the talking”.

The pinks and greens continue (quite literally) up the stairs onto the landing, where Lindsey has paired \nYellow 01 woodwork\n with warm white walls and violet accents. 

Despite her boyfriend George “not wanting too much pink” (who’s going to tell him about the pink carpet walls in his music studio?) in Lindsey’s office she said, “to hell with it. I’m going to paint the walls, woodwork, and the floorboards pink”.

Whilst Lindsey and George seem to have very similar decor tastes, this is a great tip if \nyou and your partner have different decor styles\n: create a space that is yours and yours alone. For Lindsey, that’s her office. Whereas in the bedroom, a space they share, they’ve kept things really minimal, with a soothing sky blue half-painted wall.

We love Lindsey’s white tiles with green grouting bathroom. There’s something really retro about it and we’re seeing a lot of coloured grouting right now. “I feel like in the bathroom you can go a bit crazier with the colour and design, so there are quite a few colours in here”. She’s gone for \nPink 02\n on the walls contrasted with a pillar box red mirror—a lovely tonal colour combination.

Turning a four-bed rented cottage in Somerset into a cosy farmhouse-meets-eclectic home is no mean feat. But Tash Bradley, Lick’s Director of Interior Design, managed it––without breaking the bank. A lesson in combining decor styles, as well as how to decorate a rented home whilst still making it feel like your own, we take a look at how Tash transformed this centuries-old house, with a lick of paint.\n\nTash’s kitchen decorated in Green 05 \nAs this is a rental, they couldn't change any fixtures or fittings. "The units are a pale, creamy colour, so we wanted to go darker on the walls to have a cool contrast." That's where \nGreen 05\n comes in. "It has a strong yellow undertone giving it a rich energising feel–ideal for a kitchen". According to Tash, this room doesn't get much light;\n\n“I always encourage people to work with the light that they’re given. People often think that you should go light if you have a small, dark room. However, when you try to fight against the light by going for lighter paint choices, those colours can look dull, flat and lifeless. Darker colours, on the other hand, actually absorb shadow, meaning the corners of rooms are more blurred. This makes a smaller, dark room appear larger than it is. Going darker, therefore, gives the illusion of space and can also make a room feel warmer”.\n\nTash adds a pine dresser to store their plates and tableware, as well as some \neco-friendly, plastic-free Kilner jar storage\n, giving the kitchen a real \ntraditional farmhouse\n feel.

Tash’s living room decorated in Pink 04  \n“When we’d finished painting this room, without the furniture it looked overwhelming. It wasn’t until we put the sofas back in and added the artwork and mirrors that it started to break up the \nPink 04\n”. A lesson - if ever there was one - is to trust the process. Now, the tonal harmony instantly makes you relax––“\nPink 04\n is just cuddles in a tin”. Alongside playing with tones of pink (“one of the \nbiggest interior design trends to look out for in 2022\n”, she says) Tash has used a \ncomplementary colour scheme\n in the form of a yellow vase, blue artwork, and a mustard armchair. It is quintessentially \neclectic decor style\n and her curated collection of ornaments and trinkets make this room sing.

Tash's day room decorated in White 06\n“We spend most of our time in this south-facing room and the light is just perfection, so we wanted to embrace this and keep things light and airy”. \nWhite 06\n was the answer. Warm and inviting, this colour provides a gorgeous neutral backdrop that allows a Berber rug, rustic pine furnishings, and a pop of green from the garden to do the talking. It’s the perfect spot to sit with the Sunday papers, morning coffee, or a good book.

Tash’s main bedroom decorated in Pink 01 \nAccording to Tash, "if you're looking for a calming colour, \nPink 01\n is the answer. It physically soothes you and makes you feel relaxed". Another south-facing room, the main bedroom is filled with light. "I wanted this room to be warm \nand \nbright, so instead of going for pink and green, I went for a dreamy combination of pink and blue". This room is all about escapism: the David Hockney ‘A Bigger Splash’ print, the rattan lamp, and block-print bedspread. "It's a small room for the main bedroom, so the vertical lines on the headboard and curtain make it appear bigger as your eye travels up with the patterns," explains Tash. A nifty trick if you're trying to make the most of limited space. 

Tash’s guest bedroom decorated in Green 02 \nYour classic farmhouse style bedroom. "This room is quite a dark room, so I went for \nGreen 02\n, which is a mid-tone to give the room a strong identity," Tash explains. "People always ask me why \nGreen 02\n is so popular. It's the perfect green to connect with you the outdoors. It's dusky, a bit muddy, strong without being overwhelming, brave yet calming." No wonder it's our customer's favourite. "It can work in any room, any direction. It's such versatile colour". Tash compliments the \nGreen 02\n walls with orange and pink accents, with a \nDIY upholstered headboard\n, colourful woven throw, and pink trim pillows.

Tash's guest bedroom decorated in Teal 01 \nSimilarly, as with the other guest bedroom, this one doesn't get a lot of natural light. Just as with the kitchen, Tash has embraced the (slightly) darker side with \nTeal 01\n. "Ideally, I'd have liked to take the \nTeal 01\n all the way onto the sloping ceiling to make it feel really enveloping, but as we're renting, we had to keep the ceilings and skirting boards white". Alongside a classic wrought-iron bed, Tash has upcycled a pair of charity-shop bedside tables by using some leftover \nTeal 01 paint\n to make them feel more contemporary and almost blend into the walls.

It's a lesson in how - if you get your landlord on board - you truly can transform and personalise a rented home. Though there may still be limitations, renting doesn't mean you have to live in a white-on-white box. Nor does living in a period cottage mean that you can't embrace \nthe eclectic decor style\n. Tash Bradley, our Lead Colour Specialist, caught up with model and food enthusiast, Daisy Lowe, to talk all things colour, cooking, and home renovations. Earlier this year, we transformed her North London house into a cosy, modern-gothic-meets-vintage-inspired haven. In her colour consultation with Tash, Daisy described how she wanted to add character and a splash of colour to her home.\n\n“When I bought this house, I thought to myself, right, I’m going to be an adult! So it was all off-white and muted...But then when it came to the colour consultation, I realised—it has to be colour”. She wanted each room to have its own unique design element whilst using hues that flow throughout. Enter Lick.\nDaisy's kitchen decorated in Pink 02 paint\nIn Daisy’s words, the kitchen is “industrial country with a lot of pink”. \nPink 02\n, to be specific. Its warm tones are instantly inviting and contrasted with dark, modern farmhouse style cabinets and white marble splashbacks and countertops. It really stands out. The renovation work turned the space into an open-plan kitchen-dining room. In fact, that’s what it’s all about: cooking and entertaining. “I \nlove\n cooking”, says Daisy “it makes me so happy being able to fill everyone with all the love that I’ve put into it”.

The entire room surrounds a traditional aga on the kitchen island, allowing Daisy to cook whilst facing her guests (who can seat themselves on pink bar stools, what else?). Daisy’s hallway decorated in Pink 04 paint with Pink 01 woodwork \nAside from the kitchen renovations, it was simply changing the colours throughout the house that achieved the biggest transformation. "House renovations are a huge commitment—and really costly. It's amazing how much you can change the look and mood of a room with just paint", explains Tash. In the hallway, that feels like a big, warm hug welcoming you home in the shade of \nPink 04\n walls and \nPink 01\n woodwork. "Being around pink just uplifts. You just feel cuddled", says Daisy. "I haven't done any building work in the rest of the house—it was just the colours—yet it feels so much warmer".

Daisy’s living room decorated in Grey 07 paint and Pink 01 woodwork\nThe muted pinks with subtle greens (disguised as \nGrey 07\n, with its rich green undertones) continue into the living room. "I was a bit nervous about going dark", explains Daisy. "I'd been living with it so bright, and it didn't feel very homely. I wanted it to be light but also dark and cosy". The key to this turned out to be pulling through those lighter colours with a soft pink sofa, light curtains and keeping the woodwork fresh in \nPink 01\n whilst \nGrey 07\n serves as a perfect background, giving the room a muted earthy feel and creating an air of tranquillity. "Now, in the evenings when we're watching telly, it's just so cosy".

We took inspiration from a stunning, statement vintage chandelier. Wall-to-wall \nGreen 09\n is instantly soothing—it's the perfect backdrop for a relaxing bedroom. Again, we’ve used \nPink 01\n instead of white on the ceiling and woodwork to create a feeling of warmth, plus it pairs perfectly with Daisy's signature pink velvet headboard and a dusty pink Louis XVI love seat.

"I don't wear that much pink, but it's one of my favourite colours". In this bedroom, paired with gold-vintage frames and antique lampshades, it feels feminine without being too 'girly', and instantly grown-up.

Daisy’s dressing room decorated in White 04 paint and Black 02 woodwork\nOk, we might not all have space for a dressing room in our homes, but if you do, you've got to go full glam, right? And that's just what Daisy did. The inspiration was a box of Coco Chanel No 5. What's more instantly glamorous? We achieved this by using \nBlack 02\n on the woodwork and \nWhite 04\n on the walls. This warming black and the soft, linen-like undertones of \nWhite 04\n prevented it from being too stark a contrast. Dress in clothes that make you feel good, don’t worry about trends… as long as you feel comfortable in what you’re wearing- you will shine.

My dog Monty has the funniest character, I smile at him the most… and my boyfriend Jordan too.

Model, writer, YouTube sensation, and authority on all things style, we were only too happy to help transform Jim Chapman’s new house into a home. ‘GQs Best Dressed’ and one of fashion’s most influential faces, he gives Tash the behind the scenes tour of what has become the family home for him, his fiance Sarah, and baby Margot.\n\nDecorated in rich blues, teals, and greens—with just a splash of \nPink 01\n for good measure—Jim’s home is a cosy and elegant family haven. Moving in just nine months ago, the house already feels loved and lived in. And that was kind of the point. From flat to cosy family home, the main reason behind the move was baby Margot. But they’ve managed to find a happy medium with this gorgeously rich \nTeal 03\n in the living room. It’s got a lot of blue in it, so it contrasts perfectly with their peachy sofa. Jim’s hallway decorated in Blue 07 paint\nAccording to Tash, “when it comes to maintaining a sense of flow, the colour of your hallway is so important—it sets the tone for the whole house. Using darker hues will spark excitement on arrival and make every room leading off it feel bigger and lighter”. So, dark and dramatic it is with \nBlue 07\n on the staircase (not to mention some very clever understairs storage) in an \neggshell paint\n for a really durable finish.

Jim’s office decorated in Green 04 paint\n“There’s a bit of a green theme running through the house”, Jim admits. And he’s gone full \nGreen 04\n in his man cave. The walls, the woodwork, even the ceiling—it’s the smallest room in the house and the effect is one that totally cocoons. It accentuates the house’s incredible period features. “I try and tell clients the entire time, it’s not going to make the room feel small,” says Tash (if you don’t believe her, take a read of our blog on \nwhy you should paint or wallpaper your ceiling\n). The enormous bay windows allow in loads of light which, when accompanied by the gentle \ncomplementary colour scheme\n of pink and teal, leaves the room feeling fresh and bright yet calming and soothing. In the bathroom, they’ve used \nTeal 01\n, \nleftover paint\n from the bedroom, which creates a sense of flow and continuity. 

Margot’s nursery decorated in Pink 01 \nLast but definitely not least is Margot’s dreamy \nPink 01\n nursery. “This is actually one of my favourite parts of the house,” says Jim. “I do the mornings and Margot is always delightful first thing…I get really excited when I go to bed now!”. According to \ncolour psychology\n, pink is great for babies as it’s a really soft and nurturing colour. We can’t think of a better hue for a newborn’s nursery. “It’s the same colour as the bedroom, but it feels \nso\n much warmer,” says Jim, “thanks to warming woods and beige accents”. \n\nThey’ve also gone for one of our favourite looks which is a jungle-themed nursery with that \ntropical theme mural wallpaper\n and lots of stuffed animals and cuddly toys. She's sat in the studio with the likes of Elton John and performed her avant-garde shows across the globe. Still, earlier this year, the multi-hyphenate Rina Sawayama found time to catch up with Tash Bradley, our Lead Colour Specialist, to discuss her most colourful collaboration yet. A creative through-and-through she spent lockdown writing her second album and decorating her house.\n

A lover of all things colour, Rina was looking for a home that felt soft and peaceful whilst also adding character with her paint palette. "I love that Lick is very curated. With other companies, I feel like there's too much option, and it just stresses me out", Rina says (we know the feeling). It needed to be the perfect backdrop for her creative outputs. She wanted the rooms to feel large and spacious with a sense of flow between them and that cohesive colour scheme. Here's how we got the look.\nRina Sawayama’s musical “man cave” in Electric Poppies 02\nThis is where the magic happens, where Rina sits at her piano and writes her latest songs, so it needed to be an environment that inspires. "I wanted to create my own little den. I didn't have my own room until I was 15—and now I'm giving myself that space. I feel very safe here". Not only does \nElectric Poppies 02\n act as a vibrant feature wall, but the texture from the wallpaper also helps to absorb the sound. Rina Sawayama’s cosy kitchen in Red 03 and green accents\nHere the pink and green palette continues in the form of \nRed 03\n cupboards and that enviable green terrazzo splashback. Not only is this an environmentally conscious choice (it's made from stone cut-offs, making it more eco-friendly), but it looks absolutely fantastic.

When contrasted with these rich green tones, \nRed 03 \nappears pink, giving the kitchen a warm and nurturing feel. It's the room that you just want to linger in with a cup of coffee.

"I'm so inspired by Pinterest", says Rina, and that's just where she got the idea for this incredible colour-block feature wall in her kitchen. "I love a lot of colours and lots of different shapes", and this curated collection of her favourite pieces is the perfect display of this. \n\nFind out how you can \nliven up your space with colour blocking\n.

Rina Sawayama’s dark and cocooning study in Blue 07\nRina's second bedroom was quite small and didn't get much light, but we decided to use that to our advantage and turn it into a dark and cosy room with \nBlue 07\n, yet with a hint of green to keep it from feeling cold. "I always like to trust the experts, but with colour, it's gut instinct. If it makes me feel good, I go for it", says Rina. We couldn't agree more and this room is a total triumph in moody blue.

As it doubles as an office, it could be quite stimulating by day, but by the evening, once the light has gone, it's cosy and cocooning—the best of both worlds.

Rina Sawayama’s dreamlike bedroom in Pink 03\n“I get a lot of inspiration from the hotels I stay in”, explains Rina. “Hotels have the most budget, so it’s great to take inspiration from really elevated designs”. Painted in \nPink 03\n her bedroom is just that. Ever so slightly on the bubblegum side, this pink has just enough grey to keep it muted and stop it looking too girlish.

To conclude? "This house really grounds and centres me. It makes me feel grateful, even when I'm feeling overwhelmed. I feel so lucky. Without people listening to my music, none of this would be possible". What more could you ask for? A house that gives you space to do more of what you love whilst also acting as a daily reminder to feel grateful and grounded. Who wouldn't want more of that?

\nTash Bradley, our Lead Colour Specialist\n, caught up with Vogue Williams to talk all things colour, interiors, and artwork. Earlier this year, we transformed her (in Vogue’s words) “white white white white white” London home into a modern eclectic retreat. We used a focal piece of art by Irish artist Peter Doyle to inform the colours throughout the house. Its light pinks, light blues, and teal can be seen throughout.\n\nThere was a bit of compromising to be done in the Williams-Matthews household. Vogue’s style is more muted with the odd pop of colour. She likes to use her walls as a backdrop to display her art collection, whilst Spencer is much bolder; “If the decor was left to him we’d be living in a Rubik’s cube”. But that’s what Tash is for.\n\nSit down with Tash and Vogue below as they delve deeper into the thought process behind the design style, and read on to find out how you can get the look.

Vogue Williams’ living room decorated in Pink 01 paint\nThe living room in the Williams-Matthews household is so much more than just a living room. An \nopen-plan living space\n, it’s where they spend time as a family, where they cook, dine, lounge, and podcast. It’s safe to say it’s a multifunctional room and a  great example of broken-plan living.

We went for light \ngrey Pink 01\n for a white \nlook \nwith lots of warmth. According to Vogue, “it was the most surprising because when it went up on one wall, I was like oh god it’s \nreally\n pink. But now the whole room is done, it just isn’t. It’s probably my favourite colour, just because it really brightens up the room”.

Vogue Williams’ hallway decorated in Teal 02 paint\nWhen compared to the light-filled living room, the hallway didn’t get much natural light, but that didn’t stop us from going darker with \nTeal 02\n walls, paired beautifully with \nWhite 01\n woodwork. It’s the perfect palette for Vogue to showcase her art collection. “I don’t buy myself expensive handbags, I buy myself art,” says Vogue, “it’s about finding those up and coming artists that you love and buying art that you look at and smile”. Vogue Williams’ downstairs bathroom decorated in Striped wallpaper\nIn the guest loo, we went for light and bright with striped wallpaper paired with \nBlue 02\n woodwork. This is a really versatile wallpaper that you can use in almost any room, but it looks particularly stylish in this downstairs loo. \n“It’s my favourite wallpaper—and I never would have thought to put it on the ceiling!”.

Vogue Williams’ bedroom decorated in blue paint\nSticking with the blues, we went for \nBlue 03\n in Vogue’s second bathroom and even used \nBlue 02\n again in their bedroom. “Our bedroom was missing something and I loved this blue. “I was worried it would make it a bit cold, but now our bedroom is warm and cosier”. Because of its yellow undertones, \nBlue 02\n is a warm and soothing option. According to Tash, “it’s really calming and can even help you sleep”. Perfect for a bedroom. 

Vogue Williams’ bathroom decorated in Animal 02 wallpaper and pink paint\nLike many bathrooms, Vogue’s en suite doesn’t get that much natural light, so we went for the warming, yet grown-up \nPink 04\n paired with playful \nAnimal 02 wallpaper\n. “Even Spencer likes the pink! It’s not something I’d use in the entire house, but I wanted to use it somewhere. I want to use it in our house in Ireland, too.”

To conclude? “The paint has really tied it all together. I’m annoyed that I hadn’t done it before because it makes \nsuch\n a difference. It just feels like we’ve got our stamp on it now and it’s more how we want it”. In fact, Vogue enjoyed the experience so much that they’ve painted the exterior of their house in Ireland in \nWhite 01 exterior and masonry paint\n. That’s right, we ship to Ireland now!
