What is a colour consultancy and why we think it’s important\nAt Lick, we understand that picking a colour to decorate your space can be a difficult process. And with over 7 million colours visible to the human eye, it’s easy to see why.\nThe typical process of picking a colour involves going to the DIY store, looking at hundreds of tiny colour chips, taking them home to ponder and ask the opinion of a trusted companion. Then you have to make ANOTHER trip to purchase paint sample pots, then back home to cover your walls in lots of paint squares. Once you’ve decided, then back AGAIN to buy your paint or wallpaper while figuring out how much you need and what finish is best for your space. Sounds like an exhausting process, right? And a quite unnecessary one too.\nLick takes you out of the boring DIY store and helps you solve all the questions you have with a modern process from the comfort of your own home. More importantly, we wanted to provide a more personal touch and a friendly face to those that find it a challenge - for what should be an otherwise enjoyable experience.

However, one of the reasons we decided to offer video consultancy is that it allows customers who are not in London or the South East to get help too. Typically, the colour consultancy has been restricted to home only visits in London or the South East. We want to change that and make it more accessible to everyone across the UK.\nHow it works\nWe offer 1-on-1 virtual colour consultations from the comfort of your armchair. Whether you’re looking to just get a second opinion on a palette you have in mind, or simply don’t know where to start - our colour experts - \nsuch as Tash\n - are here to help you.\nWe have two appointment types. Decorating \nup to three\n rooms? Simply book an appointment for 30 minutes. Decorating \nmore than three\n rooms? Then you can drop us an email and we’ll arrange a longer session. After the appointment is arranged you’ll receive an order confirmation email with a link to choose a date and time. You’ll just need to have access to a mobile phone with video calling, like with Whatsapp, and internet access for the colour consultancy.\nThe video call itself is quite informal and relaxed. We’ll ask you to show us the space and tell us a bit more about it, such as what type of property it is and what are the main accents of the rooms. Don’t be surprised when we also ask you about your personality - this is a key part in helping you pick the right colours that will match your character and taste. Our colour consultant will then introduce you to Lick and tell you a bit more about our products and mission. It’s as simple as that.\nAfter the call, our colour consultants will tailor and prepare a presentation especially for you (let’s call it an \ninterior design mood board\n), which will help you picture your future room better. They will suggest the perfect colour for your room and explain why this is the right choice for you. If you have any questions in the process or after that, they’ll be more than happy to assist with anything over chat. Hanging wallpaper isn’t \nquite\n as complicated as you might think. \nWhether you opt for a striking pattern for a feature wall or a more subtle and muted colour to paper an entire room, wallpaper is an excellent design tool to transform the look of a room without a huge amount of hassle. It’s also hugely flexible - choose to paper a room with the same print or focus on a bold colour for a single wall or panel. \nIt’s time to stop nervously eyeing up those rolls you got and start to hang. Follow our step-by-step guide and learn how to put up wallpaper like a pro.\nTools - where to start\n
Start by gathering the \nwallpapering tools\n:\nA roll (or three, depending on the space) of wallpaper\nWallpaper paste/ adhesive - opt for one that’s already mixed to save time \nApplication wallpaper brush\nA clean cloth or two (to smooth out any wrinkles or air bubbles) \nSharp stripping knife and scissors\nFiller\nSandpaper\nPlumb line measuring tool \nTape measure and a pencil\nStepladder to get to those hard-to-reach nooks and crannies  \nProtective \ndust sheets\n for your flooring and furnishing 

(Tip: Always allow for a little extra wallpaper - around 10% - to make sure you have enough in case of the odd mistake).\nHow to prep \n
Once you’ve collected the above, kick off with the prep steps: \nRemove any existing wallpaper (yes, even the tiniest of scraps) with a stripping knife, taking care not to damage the plaster behind. \nStruggling with a few stubborn strips? Soak with hot water and a sponge to loosen up before stripping away. \nInspect your walls for any cracks or gaps. Get rid of any holes with a filler and sandpaper down for an even finish. \nUnscrew any fixings. \nMake sure all walls are properly cleaned and thoroughly dried beforehand.\n(Here's everything you need to know about \nwallpaper prep\n)

Wallpaper hanging instructions\n
The moment you’ve been waiting for - it’s time to get stuck in: \nStep 1 \nPick an area of the wall with no switches or sockets and measure the length. Add 20 centimetres for leeway and use your tape measure to mark the back of the paper where you need to cut. Fold wallpaper over on itself and cut your first strip. \nStep 2 \nUsing your plumb line measuring tool, mark a vertical line on the wall near right next to where the strip should go. You’ll use this line as a guide when hanging the first strip. \nStep 3 \nTime for the application process. Deep breaths. \nUse your brush to apply the wallpaper paste to the surface in even layers. We’d recommend starting at the top and working your way down. Perch on your stepladder to reach the ceiling if you need to. \nStep 4 \nOnce you’ve pasted the wall, position your wallpaper to check alignment. If it all looks straight, apply your first strip to the top and start to smooth it out from the centre to the edges using a clean cloth. \n(Tip: No need to panic if you’re not happy with the positioning. Lick wallpaper is designed for easy removal so you can reposition and replace to your heart’s desire.) \nStep 7 \nTrim off any excess wallpaper using your knife and ruler. Smoothen the seams and repeat for the entire wall. \nThings to watch out for when wallpapering\n
Although hanging wallpaper isn’t hugely complicated, there are a few common mistakes that beginners make: \nNot making sure the working area is well lit and well ventilated. Trust us, a little space and breathing room can make the entire papering process a \nlot\n more comfortable. \nPapering around switches and sockets? Cover them up with a wallpaper strip and use your knife to cut around them to avoid sloppy edges. \nNot putting in the prep work. Simply changing the colour or shade of your walls can go a \nlong\n way in updating the interior appearance and atmosphere of your home. Painting your walls is also a relatively easy way to freshen up a tired-looking decor without spending huge amounts. And no, you don’t necessarily need to choose bold splashes of neon or bright yellows to transform the mood of a room. \nProfessional paint application is just as important as the colour you choose, but luckily it’s not something you always need to turn to an expert for (well, unless you want to that is). Whether you’re a DIY expert or a total newbie, teach yourself how to paint a wall professionally with a little bit of patience, time and experience. How to prep your wall for painting\nThe key to a seamless finish lies in the prep. Kick off with the simple preparatory steps below and you’re good to go: \nStart by clearing your working area to give yourself ample painting space. Put away your favourite furniture items and anything you don’t want to get splatters or splodges on.\nPut a protective dust sheet down to save your flooring and any furniture that’s too heavy to move. Newspapers and bedsheets won’t be sufficient here, but either a canvas or a plastic drop sheet should work equally well.\nExamine your wall for any flakey areas or little bumps. Use filler and sealant to fill up any cracks or holes or a scraper to even bumps and flaking paint. Don’t skip this step if you want to achieve a smooth and professional finish.\nNext, get your painting surface ready. Clean your walls thoroughly but gently using a soap and water mixture. Wipe clean and leave to dry.\nOnce the surfaces are dry, use painter’s masking tape (the best \ntape for painting\n) or good old-fashioned masking tape to cover any sockets, switches, and skirting boards in the area (check out more about the \nbest paint for skirting boards and how to paint skirting boards\n). Line up the edges of the tape with precise care to avoid a lopsided paint job.\nTime to prime. Apply a smooth and even base coat of primer using a roller. Work into smaller crevices using the tip of your paintbrush. Leave to dry for a few hours before starting to paint.\nDo I need to prime before painting?\nIf you happen to be using a Lick paint, then 1) great choice, and 2) you can skip the primer step - our paint has been carefully developed to ensure you only need two coats, and no primer base either.

How to paint a wall: painting instructions\nStart by stirring your paint thoroughly for an even texture.\nFirst, use a paintbrush to tackle the edges and corners - this is known as cutting in (learn \nhow to cut in when painting\n). Load enough paint to cover the brush halfway up the bristles. Tap your brush on the side of the can and get rid of any excess paint before brushing.\nNext, get to work on the main surface areas in the middle using a paint roller. Dip your roller into the paint can and start to paint your wall in ‘W’ or ‘M’ motions for even distribution.\nLeave the first coat to dry for a couple of hours before you apply another coat. Most walls shouldn’t require more than two coats of paint. Top tip: remove the tape from the wall whilst the second coat is still wet.\nLeave to dry for at least 24 hours and remove your dust sheets to reveal your brand new wall.\nEt voilà- you’re done!

What to watch out for\nAs is life; things don’t always go to plan - and the same can be said for when you’re painting a wall. But there are a few things you can do to ensure a stress-free painting experience. \nStash upholstered items far away from your work area to skip the stress of dealing with deeply embedded stains.\nAvoid the temptation to skip the priming stage if you want a vivid and consistent finish, especially if you’re painting over a darker colour (unless you’re using Lick paint that is - in which case, you won’t need to use primer).\nKeep your work area well-ventilated to minimise drying time.\n--\nRight, onto the next wall…or cupboard!
