Meet Alex Glover: Lick specialist decorator and colour consultant

Lick specialist decorator and colour consultant Alex Glover

WordsMegan Lambert

Decorator to the stars and in many an interior designer’s little black book, Alex Glover has made a name for himself in the world of interiors. Since founding Austin James back in 2018, he’s worked with the likes of Rachel Chudley, decorated the homes of many a celeb (although he won’t let us say who—which tells you all you need to know), and has been featured on the pages of Vogue. In short, he’s an interior decorator with a difference. And now he’s lending his eye for colour to Lick Studio. So, we caught up with the man behind the overalls and found out a bit more about his journey, what inspires him, and why he thinks you should always dress properly for a job. Even if it’s a paint job.

How did you get into interior design?

I’ve been in the business for over 10 years. Through school and uni I’d do the odd decorating job for my Uncle’s company. I was lucky enough to work in some amazing homes, so what started off as a means to make money turned into a passion. Having worked on building sites, I understand that day to day process in a way that not all interior designers do. And having shadowed some incredible interior designers, I bring more creativity to the job than your average tradey. I’ve managed to create a bit of a niche for myself.

What are your biggest influences and source of inspiration?

Holidays and travel are always a great source of inspiration. I’m obsessed with neoclassical architecture and get a lot of inspiration from museums of all places. The Sir John Soane's Museum is a favourite. Also raw materials and texture. The colours and textures of a country or place influence you creatively.

What do you enjoy most about your work?

Loads of stuff. Installation day, when you see everything come together is always great. But mostly the being out and about and in different spaces. Not being behind a laptop the entire time. I also love the hands on side of my work. In fact, my favourite bit overall would probably be the painting. It’s really therapeutic.

How would you describe your personal style?

At the moment I’m on a bit of a neutral train—but obviously it depends on what your clients want! I’m obsessed with Rose Uniacke’s style. I love lots of texture, natural raw materials like stone and marble, heavy linens and tactile fabrics. I want to create personality and style through layering on lots of texture. Oh, and when it comes to work style, I believe you’ve got to have an OCD approach and look professional. Don’t rock up in paint covered overalls.

What’s in the pipeline for you?

I’m currently working on a 20th century house in Twickenham which has the most incredible architectural details (including an orangery) as well as a contemporary country house in Oxford, and an amazing project in Hampstead. They’re all so different so it’s really fun seeing what direction each project takes you.

And we’ve got to ask: favourite Lick colour?

I don’t usually love red, but it’s got to be Red 03. It’s got a really earthy terracotta pot vibe. It just sings of Morocco or Tangier. That said, the colour I use most frequently is White 03. It really brightens up a space.
