\nWouldn't it be cliché of us to comment on what a year it's been? Yet here we are doing it anyway, because seriously, \nwhat\n a year it's been. This time 365 days ago, we launched our new venture, and almost immediately, the pandemic plunged the world into a global lockdown. Fear, frustration, foolish optimism, and then back to fear covers the emotional arch we went through. One year on, we're able to look back with (mostly!) fond memories, but whilst we were on it, the ride was white knuckle. That's why we wanted to take a moment to thank all of you, our community of decorators. We wouldn't be here if it weren't for your support.

How it started\n\nIt all started with Lucas and Sam and a shared mission to make decorating simple. Less mess, less waste, less hassle. Sustainability was our MO from the get-go. Our aim was not just to comply with environmental industry standards but to influence them. We wanted to create a people-powered decorating movement and to change the global interiors industry's environmental impact for the better. \n\nIt all seemed a bit far-fetched at the time, but we had to start somewhere. We launched with our range of stick and peel paint samples, the first of their kind in the market, and low VOC paints. Our stick and peel samples weren't just more environmentally friendly; you could choose your paint palettes without leaving or making a mess of your house. Ideal during what was the beginning of lockdown. Similarly, our paints are water-based and low VOC, meaning a more biodegradable end product and no pungent smells. Again, helpful when you're stuck at home.

How it's going\n\nWe've made some friends along the way. Our online community of interior lovers has gone from zero to almost 150,000 across our platforms, and we've managed to collaborate with some fantastic creatives. There's nothing that we love more than seeing your transformations. That's why we've launched several social channels, including our 'Decorating Diaries' as well as our blog, In Good Taste, answering all your 'How To?' questions and delivering daily interior inspiration.\n\nWe've also launched a whole load of new products. In the paint department, you asked, and we listened. The result was a range of eggshell paint for steamy bathrooms and easy-wipe kitchens. We also launched a collection of easy to hang, FSC certified wallpapers (ensuring they are sustainably sourced from forests around Europe), so they hang about on your walls and not the planet. Working with some of the most talented artists, our wallpaper designs are created in small batches, to avoid waste – we even use excess cut-offs in the packing process, so nothing goes to waste. Not one to leave it there, we launched our range of easy to fit blinds that can be perfectly matched to your paint.

From beginning to end, we ensured that our supply chain was as environmentally friendly and sustainable as possible. From our low VOC paints, manufactured in the UK; to our packaging, which is 100% biodegradable, recycled and recyclable. We only work with suppliers that meet our demanding eco-standards, almost all of them based in Europe, meaning our products have a lower carbon footprint. It makes sense then that not long after launching, we released our range of B-certified, eco-friendly supplies, meaning that you can decorate your home with a clean conscience.

Giving back as we grow\n\nMost importantly to Lick, as we've grown, so have our contributions to the environment. Last year we partnered with two leading charities, 4ocean and One Tree Planted. For every tin of paint you buy, 4ocean removes 18g of plastic from the ocean. For every roll of wallpaper or pair of blinds you buy, One Tree Planted plants a tree. So it's thanks to you, our customers, that we have succeeded in removing over 6,900 kg from the planet's oceans (equivalent to more than 76,671 plastic bottles) and planted more than 2322 trees, covering an area larger than 32 football pitches. We wanted to start a people-powered decorating movement, and it's because of you, we've done it.\n\nWhat's more, we've made ourselves accountable. That's why we've launched our Sustainability Hub, keeping you up to date with our constantly improving sustainable practices, and why we have committed to an annual Sustainability Report auditing our eco-credentials.

Where it's going\n\nLooking ahead, we are constantly looking to grow and improve our sustainability efforts and make an impact on the global interiors industry. This one’s an announcement that we’ve been brimming with excitement to share with the Lick tribe for some time. But today, we can finally let the cat out of the proverbial bag as our debut designer collab is officially a go-go. An edited collection of four \n borne from the fantastical mind of digital flower arranger, Natasha Coverdale, AKA) Studio Coverdale, these aren’t papers to simply look at but to immerse yourself in, to get lost in, and that provide “a sort of escapism and colour therapy,” as Coverdale puts it. Eyes open wide, sense of adventure intact, it’s time to step into her world…\nwallpapers\n

Natasha – the designer, the illustrator, the fantasist\nBorn in Hong Kong, raised in England, followed by a short stint in Texas, Bangkok, and then back to Britain. Graphic design for many a luxury brand, a Master’s in print textiles, and an illustrator on the side as her own private pride and joy —it’s fair to say that Natasha’s story is as rich and varied as her work.\n \nIt wasn’t until 2018 that she took the brave step of going it alone and launching her own studio where she could do what she does best and what she loves most of all: creating her own artworks for people who embrace colour, botanical pattern, painterly heritage and the notion of hidden treasures. Natasha’s known for hiding surprises in her pieces such as Derek the iguana who crops up again and again amongst her dreamt-up blooms.\n \nBut that’s enough from us, get the proper lowdown in \nour exclusive lockdown Q&A here\n.\nThe Lick \n×\n Studio Coverdale collection\nTwo designs, two colour ways, four fantastical \nwallpapers\n, this is a collaboration that seeks to showcase Natasha’s imagination and creative hand with zero holding back. Focusing on her favourite florals to date, in our papers she layers and layers to create a mass of foliage, especially in the aptly-named Mars Meadow wallpapers.\n“It’s a cornucopia of so many flowers that I’ve used in other prints. I always create my own flora, coming up with names, characters and even scent profiles for each of them from Ice Sprites, Dragon Bells and Pearl ferns to the rare and fragrant Electric Poppies that I showcase in my other wallpaper design. Mars Meadow is best of the bunch if you will!” says Coverdale. “I wanted to design wallpapers that were as rich and indulgent as my mind would let me, with as many colour influences in one piece as possible.”

Back to boho-meets-British-heritage \nMars Meadow\n, it comes in two distinct palettes – one that draws on the colours of fresh foliage, rightly named Evergreen, and the other, Harvest, that is warm, comforting and nurturing. Our second paper, \nElectric Poppies\n, might share the same distinctive character and 17th-18th century inspired detailing.\nIt comes as no surprise then that Natasha watches period dramas as she draws and spends much of her time lost in the archives at Kew or sketching in various National Trust properties), but it’s a far cleaner, more vibrant design. Here, pick from Mansion Library, which has a sumptuous deep green as its hero hue or Candy that Natasha hopes will encourage people to be playful in their interiors. “It’s about fun, femininity and frivolity,” she says.

Find your wallpaper and pair your paint\nThink you’ve found your perfect wallpaper? Natasha’s hope with her pieces is that it’ll make people feel good about colour and pattern and at Lick, our aim’s much the same. Which is why our resident colour experts have paired a palette for each \nLick x Studio Coverdale wallpaper\n, which means you can easily either build up a multi-tonal colour-rich palette or, pick out just a hue or two. Depending on whether you want to let the \npaint\n sit back in the scheme or to make a statement on every surface in the room.\n \n\nMars Meadow 01:\n \nThere’s something a bit psychedelic going on here and we think it’s important to not let the paint colours distract from the magic that the wallpaper is creating. We’d suggest quieter paint colours like \nBlue 02\n and \nBlue 03\n. If you’re somebody who prefers a darker colour scheme, look to Blue 05 or even \nGreen 05\n with \nTeal 03\n as a happy middle ground.

\nMars Meadow 02:\n We love the idea of really celebrating the hero hues in the harvest finish by taking them to the walls too. \nOrange 02\n, \nYellow 02 \nand either of our reds – \nRed 01\n and \nRed 03\n – will help the wallpaper to seamlessly settle into your living space. This palette is less about contrast and more about consistency in colour so that the whole room is one big statement rather than having a feature section. If you want some contrast however, try \nBlue 03.\n

\nElectric Poppies 01\n: ‘Pull out the understated pale blue trim seen on the petal edging with \nBlue 01\n or \nBlue 02\n and work in some contrast with \nBlue 05\n on your skirting boards. This gives the paint the best possible environment to dry thoroughly.\n\nOn to the ‘how’: \nStart by removing any old and flaking paint with a paint stripper and scraper. You want to apply your exterior paint to a completely bare wooden surface.\nWipe down the surface with a sponge soaked in warm water.\nSand the surface so it’s nice and smooth. \nUse your \npainters masking tape\n to mask off any areas that you don’t want to get paint on.\nIf the wood you’re painting on is new or well-weathered, apply a diluted first coat (a mixture of 70% paint and 30% water). This first ‘mist’ coat is the most important one for long-lasting results. \nNote, some woods will stain and bleed through light colours. For plywood, red cedar and very resinous woods, apply a stain blocker first. \nPaint your first coat and allow to dry for 2-4 hours\nPaint the second coat and remove masking tape. Leave to dry for 16 hours/overnight. \nStep back and admire your freshly painted window sills. You did that. \n\nFollow the above steps using Lick exterior paint and your paint job will last you up to 10 years. Note: if the wood is new and treated, we’d recommend leaving it for at least 6 months before painting, as the treatment needs time to weather first.\nHow to paint exterior uPVC window sills\nIf your window sills are made of plastic or uPVC, you just need to prep them slightly differently. Just make sure that you lightly sand the surface before application. This will give the paint something to stick to so it lasts for longer. We found there were two main reasons why you need a different formulation for paint anything exposed to the outdoors:\nExterior paint needs to be more durable. \nAlthough good interior paint should be highly durable, exterior paint needs even more durability. As it’s exposed to the elements, exterior paint which isn’t durable enough will fade and flake more easily. \nExterior paint should be weather-resistant. \nYour outdoor surfaces are exposed to both rain and shine, and high-quality exterior paint should be able to withstand either and come out looking good on the other side.\nWhat is Lick’s exterior paint? \nIt’s here! We invite you to take a closer look at our own range:\n\nSurfaces\nLick exterior paint is designed to work on a range of outside surfaces. Our exterior paints have all the pigment-rich vibrancy of our indoor paints, coupled with the added durability and gloss retention required for weathering the great outdoors. \n\nCoverage\nCoverage-wise, our exterior paint offers a coverage of 13-15m² per litre. For a long-lasting finish, we’d recommend applying at least two coats. If you’re using a darker or brighter colour that’s more prone to fading, or if you're painting a surface that is south-facing or gets a lot of sunlight, you may even want to apply three. \n\nLifespan\nThe lifespan of our exterior paint is up to 10 years. It’s worth noting that south-facing areas that get direct sunlight and darker or brighter colour may fade more quickly.\n\nDrying-time\nWondering how long it will take you to get your exterior paint job done? We’ve developed our exterior paint to dry in as little as two hours. For best results, paint above 10 degrees, apply a second coat after four hours, and allow to dry overnight (ideally 16 hours) before potential exposure to frost or rain.\n\nPrep\nTo get the most out of your Lick exterior paint, the prep step is very important. When working with wood, plastic, and uPVC surfaces, simply give it a light sand before paint application. More porous surfaces such as wood, brickwork, and masonry will need a thin down coat before painting. For some woods and metals, you may need to use a stain block or metal primer before painting.\nWhen should you use exterior paint? \nOur versatile exterior paint is suitable for use as exterior house paint, exterior wood paint or masonry paint, as well as on brickwork, MDF, metals, plastics, uPVC (our interior paint works as \nUPVC door paint \ntoo), and ceramic tiles. The thing about neutrals is that people think they’re nothing, but they’re everything.

From warm taupes to grounding greys, a neutral colour palette has become the global trademark of British interior designer Kelly Hoppen CBE. So who better to collaborate with on our brand new, six-strong \ncollection of neutral paint colours?\n \nWhat is a neutral?\nNeutrals has become a term thrown around pretty loosely with the rise of the ‘new neutrals’ – soft, earthy, whisper-soft colours spanning beige-toned pinks and grey-tinted greens. But in Kelly Hoppen’s book, neutrals are the classic tones of cream, brand, beige, white, black, and her personal favourite: grey. Grey is what she calls a ‘neutraliser’, which helps to bring a room back down to earth. \n\nUltimately, neutrals are the colour family that provides a practical and harmonious backdrop to how you live your life.\n\n“The thing about neutrals is that people think they’re nothing, but they’re everything,” says Kelly (get to know her better in \nour exclusive Q&A with Kelly Hoppen CBE here\n).\nWhy are these the perfect neutrals?\nThe Lick x Timeless Neutrals Paint collection by Kelly Hoppen set out to be a versatile group of six shades that would, in Kelly’s words, “Add something to \neverything\n”. \n\nWithin the palette, Kelly specifically wanted to blend three hero greys that wouldn’t be too green, too blue, too black or too yellow, but just right. Whether one of those greys or a muted beige, all six colours will add understated warmth to your space. Not only that, they’ll open it up so that any room radiates with a serene sense of light and space.\n\n“You can have as little or as much of them in your home as you want,” she adds. “But also remember that colours enhance neutrals and neutrals enhance colours.\n \nSo if you love colour, choosing neutrals throughout your home can actually enhance other colours and bring them to life.”\nHow would you describe the neutral colour palette in short?\nTash, our Lead Colour Specialist, describes the palette as sophisticated and grounding. All six colours are elegant, but also entirely reliable. They're truly colours that won't let you down. Put any of them in a room together and expect to feel supported.

Why do you think decorators will love this palette?\nMore than anything, Kelly expects the characteristic that decorators will appreciate most is just how easy the palette is to work with. The neutral paint colors\nNew additions to our existing beige paints and our very-first taupe paint, there’s something for every style of interior in our Timeless neutrals collection by Kelly Hoppen (\nlearn more about our beige paint colours here\n). Even if you’re a sucker for brighter colours and are searching for an alternative to a classic white ceiling, there’s a warm neutral waiting in the wings…\nTaupe 01: brown grey paint\nOur debut taupe paint, \nTaupe 01\n is 50:50 grey to brown. An intermediate, dependable shade, it’ll never fall out of favour, continuously radiating warmth. Because of its balance of undertones, \nTaupe 01\n is a good backdrop paint and will offset brighter colours to a tee. \n\nPerfect in:\n a hallway to hug you home. Or, take it to the kitchen, aka the heart of the home, where it’ll set a warm, elegant tone for the whole house.

Beige 04: warm beige paint\nKelly and Tash describe this as a warm beige paint with a hint of black that’ll feel super serene from AM to PM. The dab of black pigment commands elegance and means \nBeige 04\n work with anything and everything. \n\nPerfect in:\n a zen living room or bedroom where it’ll help calm mind and body. In a home office it’ll help your mind stay focussed on the task in hand.

Beige 05: earthy brown paint\nAn earthy brown with grey undertones that’s as versatile as it is warming, \nBeige 05\n’s got it going on. If you fancy mixing up taupe with a generous serving of grey, then this is your shade that’ll ground any scheme.\n\nPerfect in\n: if you’ve got a hallway that lacks natural light, \nBeige 05\n’s a winner as it’ll bring much-needed warmth. It’s also a good option for a bedroom if you want things to feel intimate and cocooning.

Grey 09: warm grey paint\nMoody grey with hints of brown down low – that’s why \nGrey 09\n best described as a grey beige paint. Its warm undertones make the first of our new greys a comfortable one to be around. \n\nPerfect in:\n \nGrey 09\n might be a darker tone but it’s a warm grey paint too, that’ll make any space feel soft and feminine. We love it most in downstairs spaces like living rooms, kitchens and hallways.

Grey 10: dark cool grey paint\nFrom warm grey to cool grey paint, \nGrey 10\n’s deep, dark and architectural. We refer to it as a structural grey that paves the way for more vivid hues to follow. Paint with it confidently and it’ll stand firm, creating a striking backdrop in a contemporary setting.\n\nPerfect in:\n rooms that don’t get a lot of natural light and that have other colours and wood tones going on.

Grey 11: blue grey paint\nAnd finally, the grey hat trick, \nGrey 11\n. A blue-grey paint, it’s another calm contender that has a stabilising presence, as though your room is wrapping its arms around you.\n\nPerfect in:\n a bedroom or living room once again where the subtle blue undertone balances sunlight coming in throughout the day. A delicate neutral, it’ll feel like stepping into a haven at the end of the day to kick back with or fall asleep next to.

Red-based Black 02 forms the background of \nRainforest 02\n, meaning it’s really warming and (contrary to what you might imagine) a great choice in a \ndark, north-facing room\n. Combined with vibrant Green 07 and Blue 10, alongside blue-sky Blue 08 and Blue 04, this palette is based on nature.

Mural wallpaper design: Canopy\nStill delving into the wild, we’re looking up towards the skies, or to be precise, the canopies for our \nCanopy 01\n and \nCanopy 02\n designs. Inspired by elements of biophilic design, this intricate mural wallpaper drags you into the outdoors and reconnects you with nature. There is also a strong sustainability message—plus there’s something so adorable about those hidden monkeys, you just want to cuddle them.\n\nInspired by \nJapandi decor\n colours, these mural wallpapers are still bold in style, but although there’s a lot going on in the design, the palette is gentle and calming. Great in a hallway or downstairs loo or any wall that you feel something is missing. You could even use them in the alcoves on either side of a fireplace in a bedroom or living room.

Mural wallpaper design: Forest\nKeeping things biophilic,\n Forest 01\n and \nForest 02\n are slightly more in keeping with traditional decor trend. Plus, with only two colours, they are very easy to work with. Forest 01 features a warming White 02 background with rich Green 07 foliage, whilst Forest 02 includes that rich Green 07 as the background, with Green 08 foliage. \n\nThese designs are lush, they’re feminine, and they connect you with the outdoors. We can see them tying in with a cottagecore decor or farmhouse style. Pair them with their respective colours in a peaceful bedroom or traditional style living room or bathroom.\n\n\nBring biophilia into your home with these botanical wallpapers\n.

Mural wallpaper design: Waves\nAs per the hottest wallpaper trends of 2022, contemporary coastal designs are going to be a big trend this year. Forget those dated nautical tropes—our \nWaves 01 \nand \nWaves 02\n mural wallpapers are as cool as a couple of sea cucumbers.
