Wallpaper borders are back. Here's how to style them in your home
The nineties are making a comeback and along with it comes the rise of wallpaper borders. One of the most exciting trends in the world of interiors, this is the perfect trend to try if you want to add some pattern and visual interest to your home, without committing to an entire wall. So, here’s how you can embrace the interior world’s latest revival and style wallpaper borders in your home.
Are wallpaper borders outdated?
First rising to popularity in the 18th and 19th centuries, wallpaper borders were a byproduct of the wallpaper trend, used to conceal the ends or hide any tacks or gaps. However, like all good trends, they made a comeback in the eighties and nineties in the form of stripes and navel knots in every shade of peach, maroon, and emerald green you can imagine. It’s this outdated style that many of us will have little love for.
Are wallpaper borders making a comeback?
Done right, any trend can stand the test of time. And, just as we see in the world of fashion, what’s in vogue comes in and out of style. Wallpaper borders are no exception. In recent years we’ve seen more and more creative interior styling using wallpaper borders. And what’s more, they’re easier than ever to hang.
Introducing our modern wallpaper borders
We’re embracing the wallpaper border comeback so much that we’ve created our very own collection of modern wallpaper borders in partnership with renowned interior designer, Kelly Hoppen CBE.
As Kelly puts it:
“The thing about neutrals is that people think they’re nothing, but they’re everything”.
And we couldn’t have said it better ourselves. Using some of the most popular colours from our Timeless Neutrals palette: Beige 04, White 02, and Black 01, we’ve drawn on organic elements to create a range of geometric, minimalist designs that are guaranteed to add pattern and texture to your space, all within a neutral colour scheme.
“What’s lovely about these wallpaper border designs is that they’re a contemporary take on a traditional style”, says Tash, our Director of Interior Design. Our Dash designs offer a monochromatic, modern take on borders minimalist, whilst the organic weave effect of our Weave designs is a modern interpretation of an ancient artisanal skill, reimagined in print and on your walls.

How to style wallpaper borders in your home
Unsure how to style wallpaper borders? Tash takes us through some of her favourite ways to get creative with them. From accentuating your interior architecture to creating your own dado rails, here are some of the many ways you can style wallpaper borders throughout your home.
Border your skirting boards or cornicing
According to Tash, “wallpaper borders are a really fun way to frame your room, especially if you’ve got lovely period detailing”. Add visual interest by styling wallpaper borders above your skirting boards and below your cornicing. As Tash reminds us, “when you’re using a wallpaper border, you’re drawing attention to that part of the room. But they’re not going to overwhelm the room. So get creative and have fun with them”.
