According to our Lead Color Consultant Sam Bramley, “the interior world runs parallel to the fashion industry and at the moment the runways are hot with stripes. And with high-profile collaborations with brands such as Dior and Carolina Herrera under her belt, it’s certainly obvious that she has immaculate taste and a keen eye for design.\nLiving in the heart of New York City, Kate shares her Brooklyn home with her husband and two sons. In a historic building bursting with character, Kate's family home has a welcoming, relaxed atmosphere with curated colorful accents and bespoke vintage pieces. Since purchasing the property several years ago, Kate has slowly made her mark on many of the rooms, moving away from white walls and building color palettes inspired by her collection of artworks and bold items of furniture.

Unlike many people who search the internet for ideas, Kate’s home’s aesthetic is continually inspired by vintage magazines and interior design books from the 1970s, which is reflected in the warm tones and plush furnishings in her stylish living room. With her newfound enthusiasm for all things home design, she is turning her passion into reality. "Fashion was my hobby before I made it my job and now because I do that all day at work, for fun I now like to look at interiors,” she explains to Tash Bradley, our Director of Interior Design in her home tour. “I really like design, I like color and I like beautiful things.”

Working with us on the renovation of her two sons’ bedrooms and her office, Kate wanted to continue the relaxed, pre-loved feel of the communal spaces but allow each of her son’s rooms to have a distinct personality. As a fan of mixing untraditional colors, with unexpected tonal accents in each room, she worked with us to elevate her home’s decor while staying true to her eclectic approach to finding color combinations. \n
For her younger son, Kate brainstormed with Tash before choosing \nTeal 01\n, a tone inspired by patterned wallpaper she sourced in Europe and one that perfectly complements the vintage brown leather seat her son uses to play video games.

In her eldest son’s room, Tash and Kate utilized Lick peel-and-stick samples throughout the consultation period to find the color that made the most sense for the room and reflected her son’s personality, ultimately choosing \nGreen 04\n. The rich pigmentation of this shade varies throughout the day, with hints of blue reflected in the daylight. In keeping with her love of all things vintage, Kate added sentimental items to the room’s design, including an antique oriental rug passed down through generations of her family.

The final room to be transformed was a much smaller space: Kate’s office. In an area of the house that required concentration and calm, Tash advised wrapping our \nGreen 05\n all the way around the walls to open up the room. When Zoe Lower and her boyfriend Titus moved to Margate back in 2020, no one could have predicted what the upcoming years would have in store. Inspired by their own travels around the world, they spent most of lockdown transforming a six-bedroom townhouse into a colorful haven for the global gallivant. Each room will take you on a journey across the world, from Japan to Morocco.\nIf Zoe’s glittering transformations at \nThe Mermaid Cave\n (the travelling business she founded back in 2015) were anything to go by, it was apparent from the start that \nThe Tides\n, Margate was going to be a saturated success story. From reupholstering their own furniture to creating their own art, their seafront guesthouse and shoot location is a love letter to the repurposed, second-hand, and vintage.\nWe sat down with Zoe to talk about all things eco-friendly decorating, going bold with contrasting colors, and DIY corner-cutting.
\nWe love how each of the rooms takes you on a tour around the world. What was the inspiration behind each of the designs? \nIt was actually my boyfriend, Titus’ idea to do themed rooms. Each of the rooms are inspired by places we’d been on our travels.\nMy boyfriend Titus has spent quite a bit of time in Japan, so that’s where that came from. As the Japan room was initially our bedroom, he wanted it to be restful and have a monotone color scheme, hence the black and white (with a bit of gold thrown in too). I’m obsessed with the kimono hanging above the bed in there too. Honestly, I’d grab Onyx (the cat) and that in a fire.

The vision for the Moroccan room was to create a dilapidated palace feel. Once I found the rugs it sort of took on a psychedelic sixties twist. Our only real extravagance was the rugs in the Moroccan room: they’re art for the floor! We’ve tried to buy as much as possible, locally, but you’ve got to have Moroccan rugs from Morocco. We got them on Etsy (which is a carbon-neutral company) and they’re also vintage, which makes me feel slightly better about it.

Bali’s probably the place I’d been to the most. I wanted to offer something a bit more ‘monk-like’ but still with a ‘Tides’ twist. The room’s neutral color scheme gives it such a calming atmosphere, and everything in there is built for comfort. Many of the rooms have the most unbelievably soft sheets by Paragon Bamboo. It was so important for us to design spaces that felt like a retreat for our guests, and the sheets in the Bali room are the comfiest you will ever sleep in!

The Mexican room was inspired by our trip to Oaxaca just before lockdown. It’s very rainbow, with lots of cobbled streets. It’s got a really romantic feel there. We were inspired by the colorful, little churches you find there. So we decided to have stained glass windows in the bathroom. It’s meant to be a sort of cobbled courtyard garden. The walls are actually encrusted with used coffee grounds to create a textured look. So I kept them in the freezer for months before I started on those!

In three words, how would you describe your decor style? \nHand-crafted, surrealist, detailed.\nYou have wonderful attention to detail. How did you go about sourcing all the fittings and furnishings? \nI always know what I’m looking for, sometimes I just haven’t found it. When you do know what you’re after, Facebook Marketplace is great; otherwise, it can be a bit of a rabbit hole. We haven’t sourced anything from high-street retailers or Amazon. I actually did a panic dash to TK Maxx just before we opened, and had to take the stuff back as it just didn’t look right. Most of our fabrics are second-hand from eBay. Margate is also great for charity and antique shops.\nI love things that have a history, like the parasols in the Japanese room. I sent pictures of the room to a few of the people we bought them from, some of them were clearing out their granny’s loft, and they were so happy. It's lovely to be able to give something a new life, to show it’s gone from being hidden in the attic to pride of place in a new home.

What was your approach to sustainability when designing The Tides?\nMaximalist design with minimal impact. That’s the key take-home, to tread lightly. Because I’ve been trying not to buy new, I’ve found some really weird and wonderful things. We want it to be escapist. We want guests to come here and feel like they're transported. I think one of the main things that makes us unique is that almost everything, from the canvases to the fabrics, is sourced second-hand. What isn’t, we’ve bought from brands that are ethical and eco-friendly. Our zero waste solution to bathroom luxury was found with the gorgeous FIILS products. They provide an all-natural, divine smelling range in a closed-loop supply, so we can offer all the hotel luxuries without the guilt of any waste in packaging. I also use \nleftover paint\n for my artwork and \nupcycling furniture\n. Nothing goes to waste!\n
\nWhat would your advice be to first-time upcyclers?\nI’m a bit of a corner cutter, and my advice would be not to do this. The pieces where I’ve followed the steps are the ones that look the best. And they’re the ones that will stand the test of time.\nWe love how brave you’ve been with your color combinations. How did you go about putting the colour schemes together?\nI feel like I’m always treading the line between colorful and garish. But for me, color soothes me. I probably have the same reaction when walking into the Moroccan room that most people get when walking into a neutral room. I'm a big fan of color contrasts. I do a lot of fashion photography, so I’m always considering gradations and tones.\nWhen it comes to putting a color scheme together, sometimes it’s one random piece that can inform the whole palette. My biggest learning from the Moroccan room project was that it’s so much more difficult to find the perfect rug once everything else is in place.\n \nFind the rug first and then you can weave in the other colors and fabrics.

It was a blustery Sunday afternoon when we pottered on over to the leafy East London De Beauvoir neighbourhood to meet with Paul Holt, Creative Director at N1 Garden Centre. Housed in a former button factory, we first came across this urban space at last year’s \nRHS Chelsea Flower Show\n when this little London garden centre won ‘best in show’ for the first-ever Houseplant Studios category.\nWell, we’ve said goodbye to autumn and hello to spring. That’s why we thought there’d be no better time to chat with Paul about his top tips for novice gardeners and how to prep your garden for spring.\n
The clue is in the name, but what was your inspiration behind ‘Celebrate Autumn with Plants’ at last year’s Chelsea Flower Show? \nWell, it was such an unusual RHS Chelsea Flower Show, because of the pandemic, it was the first time in its 100+ year history it had been held in autumn. It had been such a tough time, we really just wanted to go to town with the autumnal color palette and embrace it as a kid! Chestnuts, jumping into crunchy leaves—and of course, autumnal coloured plants like Coral bead, Orange king, Bird of Paradise, and Eternal Flame (plus a few pumpkins). Houseplants don’t have to be green!

Gardening saw a massive boom during the pandemic. Any tips for the novice gardener? \nFor anyone who started gardening during the pandemic, my top tip would be to just keep it up. I encourage anyone to tend to their plants as regularly as you can—for the well-being of yourself and your plants. Gardens take time, so the best time to start is \nnow\n. If you don’t succeed the first time, try again! It’s like exercise, you just need to stick with it.\n\nWhat do you predict the biggest garden trends of 2022 to be?\nGardeners are wanting to be more wildlife and environmentally friendly. As individuals, we’re thinking about how the plants we grow in our garden can help the city: pots full of wildflowers and pollinators for bees and insects. Going plastic-free and using reclaimed or recycled materials is another big one. We stock pots by the ‘Hairy Pot Co.’ which are a great alternative. Spring is finally here! What are your top 3 tips for gardeners to get their space ready for the summer season?\nKick everything into action with a good clean-up. Dead leaves and mulch are where bugs, pests, and diseases harbor so clear those out and give everything a good prune. If you leave your seed heads, cut off seed heads and dead leaves because you don’t want the new ones coming through.\nRe-pot, upsize, and add some slow-release fertilizer (this should keep you going through March to October).\nNow for the fun part: work out what you’re going to do with the rest of your space. If you’ve got lots of sun, go for some herbs.\nWhat are your favorite (almost) unkillable indoor and outdoor plants?\nThe \ncast iron plant\n. This got its name for good reason. Great for cold rooms and shady spaces, this will survive under almost any conditions. \nAny \nSyngonium\n varieties, otherwise known as the goosefoot plant. Tough and beautiful, they come in intricate patterns. Happiest in warm and moist conditions, so perfect for a bathroom. \nAnd finally, the ZZ plant is great for shade and, native to eastern African, it will tolerate forgetful waterers! \nYour top 3 eco-friendly gardening tips?\nOk, you asked for three but here are four! \nPlants for bees and insects (Geranium ‘Rozanne’ is a spreading plant that the bees will love all summer long).\nIf you can, grow your own veg. If you’re short for space, a window box of herbs and edibles will do the trick. And opt for organic fertilizers, compost, and seeds—it’s better for you and the environment.\nWhere possible, try and buy locally. This can be a little tricky, but local growers will usually have a label. A good indicator that it’s grown abroad is that it will have a plant passport.\nAnd lastly, go for peat-free compost. It’s not something a lot of us think about, but our peat bogs are really valuable ecosystems. It takes 100 years to form just 100 mm of peat! They’re full of carbon so when they’re dug up that is released.\n

And finally, what have you currently got growing in your garden?\nSo I’ve got a small garden, but it gets a lot of sun, so I’ve gone quite Mediterranean with two massive olive trees, a fig tree, yucca pine trees, and an agave plant. In the summer I grow asparagus in the shade and give my succulents a little summer holiday outdoors.\n\nWhere can you find Paul Holt and his work? Well, you can either head down to \nN1 Garden Centre\n in East London (or \nW6 Garden Centre\n if you’re in West London), or you’ll find them exhibiting once again at \nRHS Chelsea Flower Show\n from the 24th-28th May ‘22.

Move over Danish pastries and step aside Scandi style decor, our new favorite Nordic export has all the saccharine sweetness of a pic ‘n’ mix stand. We’re talking about Danish pastels, of course. The decor trend sweeping our screen on Tiktok, Instagram, and Pinterest, we’re seeing more and more of our decorating community lean towards these soothing sorbet shades and quirky \nwiggly designs\n.\n
Whilst the \nScandi-style decor trend\n is all about muted neutrals and breezy whites, Danish pastels embrace every shade of the inside of a bag of Dolly mix. Content creators like \npastel-lover Lindsey Isla\n and Copenhagen-based \nSimone Noa Hedal\n show us how to style these fun and youthful palettes. From statement lamps to quirky candles, if you want to inject a little Danish cool into your home, take a look at our guide to the Danish pastels trend. 

Colorful prints \nColorful pastel artwork, particularly with floral or natural motifs, is a key component of the Danish pastel trend. It’s pieces like \nMatisse’s corals\n (available in a range of pastel hues). We love how \nLindsey Isla\n has styled her Danish pastel-inspired gallery wall, full of floral prints with vibrant mix and match frames.

Pastel color palette \nFrom gentle pinks to milky yellows, soft lilacs to mint greens, the Danish pastel color palette is sugary sweet and totally uplifting.

Murano lamps\nIf your Instagram is anything like ours, it’s probably been inundated with adorable Murano glass mushroom lamps. Popularised in the 1970s, if you want to buy an original be prepared to spend upwards of £600. That said, you can pick up lots of modern-day replicas, like this \npistachio green lamp on Ajouter\n for a fraction of the cost.

Statement vases\nThe Danish pastel trend is all about making a statement through your accessories and nothing does this better than a stand-out vase. This \npink ‘gingham’ vase by &Klevering \nhits the nail on the head.

Wiggly candles and candle holders \nAnd the same goes for candles and candle holders. In line with \nthe wiggly decor trend\n, Danish pastels shows off candles that are almost too gorgeous to burn. Like these gorgeous \npink twisty candles by Lex Pott via MADE.com\n, handmade by the Dutch designer in his Rotterdam studio. Or what about \nAnna + Nina’s beautiful lilac and yellow piped glass candle holder\n? Top with a colourful pastel candlestick to complete the look. 

Shell motifs\nBe it prints, cushions, candles or lamps, shell motifs and pearlescent finishes are another key component when it comes to the Danish pastel trend. We’re currently obsessed with this \noyster shell table lamp, also by ajouter\n (their whole aesthetic screams Danish pastels), and \nthis Liars & Lovers shell candle in peach.\n 

Colorful mirrors\nFrom wavy to painted, colorful mirrors are \nin\n and very much a part of the Danish pastel decor trend. We love this \nRipple Lacquer Mirror available at Jonathan Adler\n and are currently obsessing over \nSimone Noa Hedel’s painted mirror artwork\n.

Mix and match for an eclectic, relaxed vibe.

Nicola Fasano ceramics \nFor ceramics, Charlotte heads to Nicola Fasano. “The table is one of the most important pieces in our home, the place where we come together, reconnect, and slow down. When it comes to outdoor entertaining, I always reach for \nFasano ceramic plates and bowls\n. They are a work of art in themselves and will elevate any table setting”.

Sammy’s go-to garden accessories\nOliver Bonas \n“Nothing looks prettier than a gorgeous parasol and this \nRendezvous Wave Orange Parasol\n from \nOliver Bonas\n caught my eye. It has all the good looks one needs, relaxing hand-painted waves and a fab color combo of lilac and orange”. Not to mention totally on board with \nthe wiggly decor trend\n.

IKEA\nOne of Sammy’s go-tos for homewares, \nIKEA\n, delivers in the garden department too. “To keep to the practical side of garden room living I am introducing this \nVRENSTED Rug\n. It plays upon the same inside principles as indoors: grounding your furniture, pulling your scheme together. and zoning the area. Kick those flip flops off and enjoy treating your feet.”

John Lewis \nTrusty \nJohn Lewis\n is good for just about everything, but let’s not forget about one of the most important parts of garden entertainment: the music. Sammy recommends these \nwaterproof and portable speakers\n which come in a range of colors, so you can match them to your decor. \nFinally, Sam adds, “sprucing up your entertaining area with garden accessories doesn’t have to mean a trip to the shops. Look inside your home and pull your cushions, throws, side tables, and candles into the open. For a budget-friendly idea grab a couple of wooden pallets to create a seating area. Rustic and bohemian vibes right there.”

Tash’s go-to garden accessories\nvonhaus \nA great destination for all things homewares, \nvonhaus\n has some really well-priced outdoor furnishings too. Like this \nwooden frame hammock\n. “The perfect place to sit back and relax in your garden, I recently bought this hammock and it has become my favorite place to read a book and fall asleep in the sun”. 

Lighting Legends\nFestoon lights are the final finesse when it comes to getting your garden ready for entertaining. They elevate the entire look and allow you to carry on until long after the sun has set.
