3. Understand your fixed elements\nWhat items or features are already going to be part of your house renovation? Use them to start informing your color palette. For example, creating a scheme around a beloved rug, rattan console, vibrant wallpaper, or stylish set of furniture to use as a centerpiece. Find the neutrals or background shades to use as the base of your home’s color palette, then use brighter colors within the patterns to inspire smaller splashes of color in soft furnishings and accent décor. Maybe you’re hoping to keep lovely timber floors exposed, or emphasize a gorgeous wood or \nmarble fireplace surround\n? Create a visual connection in other rooms by choosing the same kind of timber, or a multi-tonal wood that picks out the same colors but also pulls in other shades. \n\nIf your woodwork has a clear undertone, you can pick a paint palette that matches and emphasizes the shades, or contrasts with it. 4. Finding your favorite colors and style\nDon’t fall into the trap of renovating just because of a current trend, or to impress friends or neighbors. It’s your space and home: fill it with colors you love and that make you happy.\n\nYour color palette should be imbued with your favorite colors and should avoid the ones you like least. A good exercise to help you find these is to find lots of inspiration from magazines, Pinterest and Instagram to slowly identify a pattern of what you’re drawn to. Create a visual \ninterior design mood board\n with your favorite magazine clippings and notice how you gravitate towards certain colors and patterns. Of course, you might have known your favorite interior colors for a long time: \nTash Bradley\n, Lick’s Lead Color Specialist explains, “My favorite color is a warm, burnt, buttercup yellow. My mum, who is a property developer and interior designer, has decorated all hallways and front doors in this beautiful yellow color. 5. Choosing your neutrals\nBright colors can be daunting, so it’s okay to start with a relaxing neutral hue and gradually add colour. Your neutral colors are the motif that appear in every room to tie everything together. It might be on your hallway walls, your bathroom floor, your kitchen counters and your living room woodwork - the arrangement is up to you.\n\nAnd so is the color - although the majority of people choose a shade of white as their neutral color, you can use something else. For example, \nlight Pink 01\n is one of our most popular neutral shades.\n\nThere are warm neutrals, like \nWhite 06\n, which has a delicate touch of pink, or \nBeige 03\n, which has gentle yellow tones (read up on the difference between yellow based and \ngrey beige paint\n). 6. Creating color harmony\nThere are three main ways to build a color scheme, each creating a different kind of atmosphere:\n\nMonochromatic color schemes\n use the same color in lighter and darker shades, for example, pale blue, mid blue (like our \ndusky Blue 10 paint\n) and deep blue. The effect is usually serene and relaxing - perfect for bedrooms or tranquil home offices.\n

\nAnalogous color scheme \nuse colors that are next to each other on the \ncolor wheel\n, like supporting a burnt orange with accents in deep yellow and red. The effect is a little more energized to look at than tonal colors and can bring a hint of spice into a hallway or dining area. Another great way to spice up a hallway is through wallpaper. Try an analogous color scheme in the design and instantly energize the space.

\n\nComplementary color schemes\n involve colors that are opposite each other on the color wheel, like green and purple. These bold combinations are fun and inject life into a room, but can be a little overwhelming in large doses. Try sprinkling these kinds of contrasts into statement kitchens or vibrant living areas.\n

Choosing colors with the same weights and undertones will make even the brightest combinations feel easy on the eye, rather than jarring.\n\nFind rhythm in the repetition of your colors throughout the house. Even if each room has a different base shade, add flashes of each accent color to keep a sense of consistency and balance. The rule of thumb is that your space should be 60% your dominant shade, 30% your sub-dominant shade and 10% your accent color.\n\nRemember that color is everywhere, not just walls. Add textiles, paint woodwork and cover shelving with wallpaper if it helps tie your rooms together.

7. Getting practical: choosing colors and samples\nWe would recommend choosing 8-10 colors for your palette to cover an entire house renovation with some variety. Start with one space, like the entryway or the room you want to have the biggest impact (probably your living room or kitchen).\n\nNext, move onto the connecting rooms and areas you can see from the first room, choosing different colors from your scheme. Each part of the house can still have a distinctive style and focus, as long as you link them together through trims, flooring, accents or neutral elements.\n\nOur \npeel-and-stick paint samples\n allow you to move them between walls, helping you to understand the way the light hits the colors at certain times of day and how they look in different rooms and corners. Stick them up 1-2 days minimum to see how they make you feel and you’ll be much more confident that the colors you pick are 100% right.

Choosing the right color for a space can sometimes be the easiest thing in the world - but on other occasions, it can be frustratingly hard to make a decision. And quite right too - the feel of the rooms we spend the most time in can be a huge factor in how much we enjoy them, so it’s important to make the right choice - but specifically, the right choice for you. \n

\nWith that in mind, consider these six questions you should ask yourself when picking a new color for a room.\n1. What is the overall style?\n
Starting point number one has to be the \nmood and look\n that you are wanting to achieve. It is very important that this is established from the outset as most people tend to have at least two different styles in their head that they are wanting to combine… and often they are completely different looks. Choose one, and stick with it. This is probably the hardest choice to make and if it has to be a joint decision with another person then this makes it doubly hard as their likes and dislikes need to be considered too. Once you have that style, this can then help limit and define the color palette that’ll work\n.
\n2. Think about the space\n
To first work out what colors might or might not work in the space, have a proper think of the architecture and type of room you’re tackling. Considering the architecture of a room will be instrumental in your choice of mood. The architect or the building will lend itself to work with a certain style and will be less successful with others. For example: if you want a grand interior with lots of decorative pieces this would look amazing in a period property that has high ceilings, but would not work in a low-ceilinged modern space.\nAnd the same applies to different types of rooms too. \nKitchens tend to be clean and practical spaces. They are rather expensive spaces so people are very keen not to get this room wrong. We are moving away from the stark modern gloss kitchen look into a slightly more relaxed vibe of \nhand-crafted and painted kitchens\n, and the mixing of colors between lower cabinets and high-level cabinets is very popular too. Sitting rooms however are our most commonly used rooms, and because of that need to reflect our personalities - or at least how we want others to perceive us. As bathrooms can be a very practical room in the morning, but also an escape room to relax in during the evening - it’s sometimes best to take a dual approach. Anyone with kids will testify to the importance of a relaxing bathroom.  So this room needs to be bright and light in the morning and soothing and relaxing during the evening. 3. When will you most use the room?\n
Confirming the purpose of the room is important to consider when renovating. Why? Because we require different things from different spaces at various points throughout the day.\nWhat time of the day is the room being predominantly used? Is it a daytime or an evening room? Humans prefer to be in light colored rooms during the daytime and in darker cozier rooms in the evenings. This is a psychological need that is subtly preparing us for sleep and is ingrained into our psyche. If the room is used mostly during the day, then I suggest that the room should be a lighter color, and if it is an evening room then it can be darker and cosier.\n4. How about natural light?\n
The color of paints or wallpaper can appear starkly different in rooms with varying natural light - so considering that is vital when choosing a new color. First, \nfind out how to tell if your room is north, east, south, or west-facing\n.\nIf you have large windows and the room is south facing then it will be lovely and bright but if it is north facing then it will be darker. With a light room subtle colors will be less noticeable (ie. They will appear to be lighter than the color swatch), as the light will reflect off the walls. In really light rooms the color can actually look nearly white. The opposite is true of \nnorth-facing rooms where colors will appear darker\n than the sample swatch because of the lack of light. \nA word of warning though. In the past, we were so concerned about the resale value of our properties that people were too terrified to use strong or dark colors in their homes. But all that has changed now and people are embracing what it is that makes them happy and realising that if they like it then there is a good chance that someone else will like it too. People are becoming much braver with their interior design choices and we are less led by trends. Thank god! But painting a room dark is not for the faint-hearted (\nread how to brighten up a dark room here\n). It is one of the most terrifying things I have done as a designer. Luckily the end result was stunning but the emotional journey during the process can be terrifying. The moral of the story though - if you like it, go for it!

5. Have you considered ‘color theory’?\n
Finding \ncomplementary colors\n or a hue that bolsters a room’s natural light is great - but you’re the one spending the time in the space, and the colors we surround ourselves with can have a monumental impact on our mood (read more about how to create a \ncomplementary color scheme\n in your home).\nColors change our mood. Stepping into a room with a different color will immediately change how we feel. This is powerful and can be used to enhance or reduce how comfortable one feels in a space. Commercial environments put a lot of emphasis on \ncolor theory\n to produce the desired effect and we should adopt the same principles for our homes. For example, blue is a calming color that will enhance intellectual thought so it is great for studies, while red is energizing and (at times) aggressive, so perfect for casinos but not generally used in large quantities in our homes. \n\nWellbeing is important\n. It could be an idea to also think about what you feel is missing from your life and create a room that gives you that. For example, people who have very stressful working lives tend to gravitate towards calm organized spaces and people who are more conservative in other areas of their lives are looking for spaces that are exciting and edgy. You will find that people’s wants and likes will change over time. A new job, a new relationship, etc. will find them yearning for something else. This is human nature - so embrace it.\n6. What else are you working with?\n
If you’re working around the furniture you already have or a statement piece of art - don’t ignore that. Your color choice on the walls is just as important as the color of the contents within the space itself.\nA common occurrence when renovating is to start with one piece that you want to use in the room, and then pull the other colors in around that one piece. Many designers will do this with art, as art tends to be a focal point in the room. All rooms need one focal point that your eye is naturally drawn to and everything else should be in tune with that piece. Nothing should be fighting it or trying to outdo it visually. \nIf you are working with existing furniture, make sure that the furniture itself all works together first. If you are trying to work with pieces that are not natural bedfellows then think carefully about changing the finish of a piece to suit. Furniture can be reupholstered and a lot of timber furniture can be repainted - don’t be afraid of this.
